‘The power of the visa’ sheds light on the global inequality in the issuing of visas. While people with a German passport can travel almost anywhere without any problems, people from many other countries are massively restricted in their freedom of movement. They need a visa, which is frequently refused – often without any comprehensible reason.
The film tells the moving story of a binational couple who, after three rejected visas and several years of separation, finally get the chance to live together in Germany. With the help of experts, the film uncovers the systematic injustices and human tragedy that the German visa issuing practice entails. It becomes clear how this practice not only reflects personal fates, but also global power relations.
